Lemire, Ariane Mahr˙ke
Born to bilingual parents from Saskatchewan, Ariane Mahr˙ke Lemire started writing at an early age. With the help of her father, classical guitarist Lyall Steel, she eventually put her words to music and started writing songs on a regular basis.
She has since played on stages across western Canada, Québec, France and Ireland. After receiving the Rawlco Magic 99 recording grant, she recorded her first album, Double Entendre, with co-producer and bassist Mike Lent. The album, which won a Western Canadian Music Award, includes both a French disc and an English disc of original songs.
In 2010 she released her second album, Decousue, which was a full length French album co-produced by Edmonton's multi-instrumentalist Cam Boyce. The album was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in the Outstanding French Recording category.
In that same year, despite a major car accident, she garnered an Edmonton's Mayor's Awards for the Arts nomination for Emerging Artist, toured across Canada (including Nunavut), and travelled to France to take part in the prestigious Rencontres d'Astaffort artist residency.
Whether accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Cam Boyce, doing a solo performance, or backed by a full band, she manages to entertain crowds with theatrical deliveries of her story-like songs which blend folk, jazz, blues, and improvisation.
Rhea March, from CKUA Radio Network said : "Whether she's singing in English or in French, language is never a barrier. Ariane mesmerizes listeners with her sultry, soulful lyrics, bewitching charm and unabashed playfulness. Double Entendre is a musical adventure that takes you on an unparallel journey into the ultra creative soul of this uniquely captivating songwriter."
