Allocution du maire Don Iveson (Edmonton, 16 oct. 2015)

[English]
_____

Good evening.

Bonsoir.

On behalf of City Council, it's a pleasure to be here today for Alberta's Francophonie Annual Congress banquet.

Edmonton's Francophone community has become an integral part of our identity.

Many of Edmonton's first residents were primarily French-speaking Metis and French-Canadians from Quebec, and these origins are still visible today.

We're Western Canada's second-largest francophone city.

Many Edmontonians speak French as a second language.

And, francophone newcomers continue to come to Edmonton from all over Canada and across the world, adding to the vitality and diversity of our city.

The ACFA has played a vital role in keeping French culture alive in our city.

Edmonton's "La Cité Francophone" is a community hub for Francophones and all Edmontonians.

"La Cité Francophone" has set the foundation for the community to become a vibrant French district.

The area is becoming known as Edmonton's French Quarters, with:

• the French Quarters Famers' Market

• local shops and cafes

• Events like The City of Light and the Flying Canoe Adventure Walk (La Chasse-galerie)

It's also home to the Campus Saint-Jean – the only Francophone post-secondary institution in Alberta.

Edmonton's French Quarters serves as a link to Canada's rich French heritage and contributes to the cultural fabric that is such an important part of our identity.

So, I'd like to thank the ACFA for organizing this conference and for your continued dedication to supporting French culture.

We want Edmonton to be a city where everyone is welcome and all our citizens have the opportunity to contribute to our community.

A healthy and vibrant French language and culture play an important role in helping us achieve this.

Enjoy the rest of the conference.

Thank you.

Merci.
