Fluent in both French and English, Jean-Philippe’s practice focuses on a broad range of Canadian income tax matters, including advising Canadian and foreign entities on tax matters relating to acquisitions, divestures, structuring of business transactions, reorganizations, public offerings and financings. Jean-Philippe also advises clients on tax litigation matters with federal and provincial tax authorities, from audit to the appeal stage.
He has appeared before the Tax Court, Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal. Before joining BLG, he completed a one year judicial clerkship with the Tax Court of Canada. He has completed the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants’ In-Depth Tax Course (Parts I, II and III), the Canadian Bar Association’s Tax Law for Lawyers course, and Bloomberg BNA’s Introduction and Intermediate US International Tax courses.
Holder of an LLM in Taxation (HEC - Université de Montréal, 2008) and of a CCL/BCL with Distinction (University of Ottawa, 2005 & 2007), he is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and of the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is also a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and the Canadian Bar Association.
