Fadel Saleh was born in Cairo, Egypt where he studied film and directed three feature films, as well as two short drama and a series of documentaries before coming to Toronto.
He received the Multicultural Gemini Award in 1992 for "A Place under the Sun ," his first film produced in Canada. Since, he has directed and written several documentaries for the National Film Board of Canada: "Si Camille m'était conté", " Ontaroises ", " Un feu dans la neige (A Warm Snow)", " Kap sur l'avenir (Kapuskasing) ", " The Black Squirrel " and "Rituel d’hommes (Hunting, a Ritual)".
He also directed for Mediatique Inc: "Adoption ... the end of secrecy", Vérité et réconciliation (Truth and reconciliation) and "À la recherche d'Étienne Brûlé (Looking for Étienne Brûlé)". Thanks to a grant from the Ontario Arts Council, he produced and directed "Les Conspirationnistes (Conspiracy Chasers)". He wrote the scripts for "Temples of Gambling", "Sandy Hill" and "70 years and Back to the closet".
The search for identity, be it social, political, economic or spiritual, is the theme that characterizes his films. Who are we, where are we , what are we doing here?
