Denis Sawyer was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, raised in Ottawa, Ontario and returned to the Maritimes in his late teens. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick at Saint John in 2008, and a Bachelor of Laws from the Université de Moncton in 2011. Prior to moving to Grande Prairie, Denis articled at a large provincial firm where he focused primarily on complex malpractice litigation and criminal defence work. Once called to the New Brunswick Bar, Denis worked solely in the field of Federal Prosecutions as a standing agent for the Attorney General of Canada for the jurisdiction of Moncton, NB.
At SGB Law, Denis’s main areas of practice are civil litigation, criminal, and municipal enforcement matters. Furthermore, Denis continues to be the standing agent for the Attorney General of Canada for the jurisdiction of Grande Prairie and in that role is responsible for the prosecution of federal drug offences. Denis is also the municipal prosecutor for both the City and County of Grande Prairie.
Outside the office, Denis is a member of the Alberta Law Society, l’Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Alberta (AJEFA), l’Association de tous les francophones de l’Alberta (ACFA), the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers’ Association and is an elected board member of the ACFA. He is fully bilingual and provides pro-bono services at the Grande Prairie Legal Guidance Clinic.
Denis has appeared in Commissioners Court, Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench.
Denis is a huge baseball fan and in the summer can be seen coaching the Grande Prairie Bantam AA Reds baseball team.
